Getting motivated about fitness and exercise in general - sometimes we all need a push

There are many people who feel that fitness and exercise is such a big part of their lives that they don’t really need motivating at all. For others, motivation can be problem – especially if they are new to exercise and training. Dubai personal trainer Nick gives his thoughts on motivational techniques and why he things they help.

  • We all get days when exercise is the last thing we want to do and we start to suffer from a lack of motivation. As a personal trainer in Dubai what are your methods when it comes to motivating your clients?

    I think it all depends on the client, some people are motivated by different things. After meeting with clients and getting to know them you quickly find out what motivates them. This could be giving them exercises that they enjoy, joining in with the session or even just sitting down for a chat!

    I have one personal training client in Dubai who had a goal of fitting back into her wedding dress after 30 years so on days that she wasn’t pushing herself I would simply remind her of her 1st goal.

  • Do you think that group personal training in Dubai can provide a more motivated environment?

    Absolutely! A group session is one of the best ways to stay motivated when training, especially for fat loss or fitness. Everyone pushing each other, chatting and encouraging to do more. The clients become part of a family in a group class so it becomes a nice environments to be around.

  • When we ‘see’ results, whether it be from weight loss, body toning or muscle gain it generally gives us a lift and does improve out motivation. However, during those periods where visible results are minimal what are the best ways to keep motivated?

    One of the key things to remember is this is a marathon not a sprint. Results will come but you need to keep working for them. Set short term goals as well as long term to ensure you are always on the correct route.

    Weekly and monthly goals will help when you are not seeing results this could be dropping 1 % body fat or gaining a little weight on your back squat.

    With my PT clients I have a plan for every session and write down what happens in every session so when we are 4/6 weeks in and if the client can’t ‘see’ results I show them that they have improved.

  • What are your top 5 tips when it comes to exercise and fitness motivation?

    1. Remember why you first started
    2. Do exercises that you enjoy
    3. Set short and long term goals
    4. If you struggle by yourself then workout with someone, a personal trainer or even join a group
    5. Always try and have fun!
