Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Yin Yoga and Even 'Hot' Yoga - which style is ideal for beginners?

So you’ve taken the plunge and decided to try out Yoga in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. Might be for health reasons or just because you have heard what wonderful benefits Yoga benefits can provide in the UAE. Great for body and for mind and best of all for any age! Yoga truly is a great health and fitness practice but as a beginner how do you decide which form of Yoga is right for you?

There are plenty of styles’s of Yoga out there and each style of Yoga has an huge number of poses (asanas). Is this question and answer session Amanda, a personal trainer in Dubai who also teaches Yoga to individuals and small groups provides great tips on what she thinks is the ideal Yoga style for beginners in the UAE.

  • In the UAE Yoga is becoming more popular for people of any age. Yoga itself has many different styles and forms. In your opinion as a personal Yoga trainer in Dubai what are the most basic forms of Yoga for beginners, i.e Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga?

For Yoga in Dubai I advise that most beginners should start out with the slower forms of Yoga, such as Hatha or even Yin Yoga to learn about the poses before going to the more challenging classes where the pace is higher and there’s less time to focus on correcting the technique. A professional Yoga trainer in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah can of course provide you with the best advice when it comes to starting out on your Yoga journey.

  • Regularly doing Yoga can help us all keep subtle and more flexible. Apart from these benefits what other benefits are there to practicing Yoga regularly for beginners?

Yoga is a great form of exercise that also builds strength and endurance, especially if you choose high paced classes such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa or Power Yoga.

Another benefit is the meditation and relaxation that helps calm the mind.

The combination of all aspects of the human mind and body in Yoga, is what makes it so beneficial for the wellbeing of people in the UAE – no matter their age or ability when starting on their Yoga journey.

  • For someone who is new to Yoga is there any best time to do Yoga, for example in the morning or in the evening? Also, how often should a Yoga beginner practice Yoga?

Generally the best time to do any form of exercise is when you have the time to do it – this includes Yoga.

But doing Yoga on an empty stomach has its benefits, so if you have time in the morning before breakfast that would be the best time to do it.

Yoga should be practiced daily or however often you can fit it into your schedule. Once you start with Yoga and make time for it you will find it easily fits into your schedule as an enjoyable part of your day.

  • As a personal trainer for Yoga what do you think are the most beneficial Yoga poses for beginners and can you advise how they help?

A Yoga session is made out of a series of movements and poses, where every pose has its counter pose and all poses have their benefits and lead to the fullness of the practice.

However, in the UAE many complete beginners will find great relieve in simple opening poses such as standing backward bend, standing forward bend, Cobra and Downward facing dog.

For slightly experienced Yogis the inversions such as headstand and shoulder stand are considered the king & queen of the Yoga poses, but as a beginner you should take your time to build up to these challenging poses – it takes time to master Yoga poses but it’s a very rewarding journey.

A taught but simple strength exercise like Dolphin pose is great for building the necessary shoulder and core strength.

  • There are many online resources for teaching Yoga poses – do you think a Yoga class or Yoga personal trainer in Dubai is a better choice for beginners and if so can you advice why?

In Yoga it is so important that the technique is correct to get the full benefit of the pose. Looking online is a start, but having a Yoga teacher/trainer in the UAE to instruct and guide you through your practice will ensure that you progress in your practice at the right pace. You will learn how to challenge yourself without getting injured.
