Exercise In The UAE – The Body-Mind Connection

Exercise In The UAE – The Body-Mind Connection

Our Minds Are More Powerful Than We Think…

You’ve read hundreds of articles related to fitness and nutrition – you know exactly what exercises to do, when to do it and how to perform them all with perfect form. Your eating habits are on par – you follow a healthy eating plan and almost hardly deviate. Everything seems on par but you still have this niggling feeling and you feel like you are in a bit of a slump.

We’ve all been there and we all go through it, so don’t stress about it too much.

The Body-Mind Connection…

Have you heard of ‘the body-mind connection’? When your mind is not in the ‘right place’ – your body will react in a negative way. Stress and lack of sleep is a major contribution – dealing with the daily stresses at work and managing your family life has it’s good and bad weeks, when you are stressed – you can almost guarantee that your sleep will be affected greatly. Living off a few hours of sleep a day, dealing with a hectic work schedule and ensuring your family’s needs are taken care of can take it’s toll on you and I can assure you, you will become more agitated which will in turn, cause more stress etc.

It’s a vicious circle that one needs to try to control otherwise you will more than likely become a walking time-bomb and everyone around you will suffer, not only you.

Tibetan monks are known to be able to control their physiology – they can slow their metabolism, adjust their body temperature and change their heart rate ….. by simply meditating. I am sure you wish you could learn a skill like that, but unfortunately they have years of training and in the 21st century – most of us certainly don’t have the time to do so.

95% Of Illness Could Be Caused, Or Worsened By Stress…

yoga personal training in the UAEOur minds are more powerful than we think – have you ever heard of the saying: ‘an idol mind is the devil’s workshop’ …. Yes, we create a lot of stress for ourselves but continuously judging ourselves and feeling inferior to others. I recently read an article that almost 95% of illness is caused or worsened by stress. Internalized stress from feeling discriminated against is associated with high amounts of belly fat, you are more likely to get flu if you are stressed out … why? …. Well because your body is so run down from being super stressed – so if you are trying your best to stay in shape in the UAE and you are not seeing results, it’s best to take a look at your stress levels and take action rather now than later.

You are the only person who can change your mind. As a professional Abu Dhabi based personal trainer I am hoping by writing this article, I would be able to give you some direction.

  1. Do you perhaps have a magnesium or B12 deficiency?
  2. Learn how to relax – there are a ton of App’s that you can download that can teach you to meditate. Start with 10 minutes a day and gradually increase the time to spend meditating. A healthy mind equals a healthy body.
  3. Start Yoga – your Yoga personal trainer can teach you simple breathing techniques that you can use when you feel a bit anxious.
  4. Start a hobby – an activity that gives you some ‘alone time’.
  5. Clean up your diet – limit caffeine drinks, sugar, alcohol. Eat regular meals to avoid the short-term stress of starvation on your body. There are plenty of professional nutrition experts who can advise you on this.
  6. Take a multivitamin – Vitamin C, the B-complex vitamins and most important, magnesium all help balance the stress response.
  7. Feed yourself with positive thoughts – try writing affirmations and read them to yourself while getting ready for work in the morning.
  8. Before getting out of bed in the morning, lie still for 5 minutes and learn to be grateful. Give thanks for all you have been blessed with (you will realize that you have so much to be thankful and grateful for).
  9. Cut out the negativity – don’t surround yourself with people who constantly complain or bring you down … others’ negativity rubs off on you and you will find that you will feel more energized if you steer clear from negative persons and situations.
  10. Activate your stress response … when you feel stressed or anxious, take a deep breath into your belly, count to five, pause for 1 second, then breathe out slowly for another count of five. Repeat for 5 times.

We are only human and we all tend to put a tremendous amount of pressure on ourselves to find perfection.

YOU are the master of your own mind. Learn to relax and enjoy life’s journey.

Children’s Exercise In The UAE

Childhood Obesity & A Lack Of Fitness In Children In The UAE…

Children in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the UAE in general should be running round outside, playing football, hide and seek or even a game of tag. The youth of today is on a fast downward spiral into further obesity and growing even more health problems. Unfortunately today’s children are more interested in playing on their PlayStation or Xbox than playing with their friends outside in the fresh air. Even worse than this most parents are allowing this to happen. Every child needs their down time to play their computer games but there must be an even balance of that with exercise and physical, extra-curricular activity.

Participating in school Physical Education in the UAE once a week is not substantial enough to combat the sedentary lifestyle and eating habits of a large majority of children in the UAE.

As role models to our children it is up to us adults to set a great example to benefit our youth in the years to come.

How Much Exercise Should My Child Get?

Kids in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Emirates in the UAE should exercise for at least 1 hour every day, it doesn’t have to be in one go. So ride their bike to school, walk the dog or go play with friends. However they do it doesn’t matter just as long as they get moving! Sitting around for more than 2 hours isn’t healthy for our body either so don’t get stuck in front of the TV; get up and move.

Trust me, your body will thank you now and in the long run.

So Why Is Exercise So Important?

Running, jumping, rolling, catching, swimming it’s all exercise and not one part of our body doesn’t benefit from it.

Let’s begin with our vital organs……..

Heart, Lungs and Brain

Firstly the more we exercise the stronger our heart and lungs become. The stronger we are the STRONGER they are.  Secondly, as soon as we begin exercising and get that blood pumping that fresh oxygenated blood supply goes straight to our brain and that does us all sorts of wonders. From increasing focus and mental capacity, to having a strong healthy brain that communicates with our body when we need to sleep at night.

Imagine how those test scores will improve if your child is more active.

Exercise is not just physical but mental - uae personal trainers

Muscles and Bones

The more you move the stronger and stretchier those muscles become. And the strength of your bones will increase to help you grow taller and stronger than ever.

Hand eye co-ordination

By simply playing a game of catch or pass with your child helps Improve their hand eye co-ordination dramatically. Children’s brains are like sponges the more they perform the more they absorb.

Staying healthy.

The old school phrase you ARE what YOU eat is still the best guideline to go by in my view. If you’re filling your body with junk food then you’re also filling your arteries with all the bad ingredients that come with it. By all means have a pizza night here and there. But for the majority of the time it’s all about balance. The more colourful the plate the better (eat the rainbow) Stock those veggie piles high and grill some fresh lean meats. Don’t buy packaged chicken nuggets, get yourself some chicken breasts and make homemade ones with your child. If you’re ever in doubt go on http://www.choosemyplate.gov or http://www.foodpyramid.com/mypyramid/ for all the necessary information.

Of course if you are really stuck with what exercise you and your kids can do then a personal trainer in the UAE who specialises in creating tailor-made workouts and exercise plans for adults and kids can help.

Foam Rolling For Pre and Post Workout
Share This - Choose Your Platform

Benefits of Self Myofascial Release – Foam Rolling …

You might have never heard of it but ‘foam rolling’ is something that we should all do prior to and after our fitness workouts. Foam rolling provides a host of benefits, the biggest of these is probably injury prevention. In this article, Chloe, a personal trainer based in Abu Dhabi UAE describes what foam rolling is and how it can help you.

What Is Foam Rolling?

Foam rolling allows you to self massage to release muscle tightness or trigger points, the technical name given to this is ‘self-myofascial release’  Foam rollers are cylinder in shape and vary size, some have bumps and dimples to target deeper into the muscle tissue and other are completely smooth.

Pre Workout…

Foam rolling for as little as 5 mins before you start your workout can help with injury prevention. The rolling helps stimulate the muscles increasing blood flow to the areas and will help reduce muscle tension, which in turn can maximize your workout potential. This should be done before anything else even stretching or a cardio warm up.

Post Workout/Recovery …

Using foam rolling as part of your cool down can help flush out the blood in the worked muscles, and aid in replenishing the muscles with fresh nutrients and oxygen reducing the amount of lactic acid. Lactic acid build ups are caused when the oxygen supply is no longer meeting the muscles demand, in turn the lactic acid builds up as a temporary substitute. This allows the muscles to continue working at the same rate for a short period of time. This contributes to muscle soreness after exercise, the quicker you can reduce lactic acid levels in the muscles, the quicker they will recover and be able to train at the same intensity again.

Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation & Flexibility…

As discussed previously foam rolling can be used in both a warm up and cool down to aid in injury prevention and muscle recovery.

The foam rolling stretches the fascia/connective tissues which surround the muscles, which as well as releasing muscle tension can help elongate the muscles helping to improve flexibility.  This is vital to both injury provision and injury rehabilitation particularly in the case of tendon and ligament damage. When the muscles become too tight and muscular flexibility is reduced, this can put extra straight on the tendons and ligaments which generally have a lot less flexibility than muscles as they contain less elastic tissue, and are not intended to stretch, this in turn can result in tendon and ligament tearing and ruptures.

Foam rolling can prevent the muscles losing they’re flexibility along with regular stretching, and in the case of a pre-existing injury increase the flexibility helping with future prevention, whilst causing little impact to the recovering area.

The Benefits Of Organic Food
Share This - Choose Your Platform

Organic Food – Is It Really Better For You?

Organic food has become a very popular commodity in UAE supermarkets these days. But reading through the food labels, benefits, and claims can be confusing. Does organic food really have more nutrients? Studies till now have not confirmed that. Do GMOs and pesticides cause cancer and other diseases? The answer is yes as they manipulate your genetic mapping and play with your DNA. What do all the labels mean? This Article from gym based Abu Dhabi personal trainer Serene Ghandour can help you make better choices about which organic foods are healthier for you and how to incorporate more organic food into your diet.

What Is Organic Food?

The word “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices must be grown in safe soil, have no modifications, and reduce pollution. Farmers are not allowed to use conventional methods such as synthetic pesticides, bio-engineered genes (GMOs), and petroleum-based fertilizers. Using natural fertilizers to feed soil and plants is an example of organic farming.

The Many Benefits Of Organic Foods…

Organic foods provide a variety of benefits. Some studies show that organic foods have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally grown counterparts. In addition, people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods. In addition:

  • Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Conventional growers use synthetic pesticides to protect their crops from mold, insects and diseases, and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat.
  • Organic food is often fresher. Organic food is usually fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives that make it last longer and tastes better. Organic produce is often produced on smaller farms near where it is sold.
  • Organic farming is better for the environment. Organic farming conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. No pesticides is also better for nearby birds and small animals as well as people who live close to or work on farms.
  • Organically raised animals are NOT given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal byproducts. The use of antibiotics helps create antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Which means that when someone gets sick from these strains they will be less responsive to antibiotic treatment. In addition, the animals are given more space to move around and access to the outdoors, both of which help to keep the animals healthy.
  • Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding, which in order will effect our bodies from hormone imbalances to many other factor that increase health risks. Organic meat comes from animals raised on organic, GMO-free feed.

Reductions In Allergies And Other Health Related Illness…

nutrition-with-kids-uae-personal-trainersGMOs have been linked to increased food allergens and gastro-intestinal problems in humans. Many people think that altering the DNA of a plant or animal can also increase the chances of developing cancer. However, so far research into the link between GMOs and serious disease has proven inconclusive. But never the less doesn’t mean that they don’t, it is always best to lower the risk of health issues by taking the right measurements and avoiding all that may play a part in it.

Whether you go totally organic or opt to mix conventional and organic foods, be sure to keep these tips in mind:

  • Select a variety of foods from a variety of sources. This will give you a better mix of nutrients and reduce your likelihood of exposure to a single pesticide.
  • Buy fruits and vegetables in season when possible. To get the freshest produce, ask your grocer what day new produce arrives. Or buy food from your local farmers market.
  • Read food labels carefully. Just because a product says it’s organic or contains organic ingredients doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a healthier alternative. Some organic products may still be high in sugar, salt, fat or calories.

Wash and scrub fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water. Washing helps remove dirt, bacteria and traces of chemicals from the surface of fruits and vegetables. Not all pesticide residues can be removed by washing, though. You can also peel fruits and vegetables, but peeling can mean losing some fiber and nutrients.

Lifestyle Changes – Training & Exercise Goal Setting For Success
Share This - Choose Your Platform

Changing Your Lifestyle – Small Steps For Great Results….

Ok, so you’ve decided that enough is enough, you’re going to cut out all the junk, get off the couch and start exercising to get that beach body you’ve been craving all these years. Great! However, before commencing this journey, there are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration. Here are a few pointers to follow from an Abu Dhabi Personal Trainer in order to ensure that these changes you make are sustainable, successful and something you can maintain for years to come.

Enjoy!

Set Yourself A Goal…

No, I’m afraid “lose weight” or “get fitter” doesn’t quite cut it! From my personal trainer experience, one of the main reasons that people decide to halt their exercise regime is through a sheer lack of motivation. Sport psychology research has proven that those who set themselves short term goals that work toward a specific long term demonstrate higher levels of intrinsic motivation than those who don’t, and therefore more commitment! In addition, give yourself a realistic time frame in which you want to achieve that goal.

For example, instead of merely losing weight, your goal could be, “I want to lose 2kg of fat in the next 4 weeks”; it’s specific, it has a time frame, it’s realistic and most importantly it gives you a clear objective to work towards!

Make SUSTAINABLE healthy lifestyle choices…

As strange as this sounds, don’t think of exercise and personal training in the UAE as your short term way of losing weight. Instead, think of it as an important lifestyle factor that you need to incorporate into your day to day life. Being active and exercising regularly shouldn’t be perceived as a quick fix, or something you need to do to prepare for that holiday in three months or to squeeze into that wedding dress, it’s something that should be part of your everyday life. That said, going from absolutely no exercise to training 2 hours a day 5 days a week is completely unrealistic and something a previously sedentary individual would fail to sustain over a long period of time.

You’re hopefully going to be maintaining this lifestyle for years to come, so there’s plenty of time for progression, start off small and gradually increase the intensity of frequency of training! Remember, sustainability is the key here.

Patience Is A Virtue…

Seeing results takes time. If your personal training goal is to lose that excess 3kg don’t expect it to happen overnight, or in the first week. Remember, sustainability and a healthier lifestyle is what we’re ultimately looking to achieve here, not a quick fix, so don’t throw the towel in if you don’t have rock hard abs after a week of healthier nutrition and three workouts.

Choose The Methods Of Exercise You ENJOY…

One of the most upsetting things for me as a Personal Trainer in the UAE is witnessing people force themselves through a workout they quite clearly hate because they think that’s the only way, and then inevitably stop training altogether. I can’t stress this point enough, if you don’t enjoy the workouts you’re doing, you WILL NOT stick to them. Everybody is different. Just because Ted down the road loves his Crossfit workouts and the media tells you that’s the “in” thing right now doesn’t mean it’s your only mode of exercise. Find out what you enjoy and use that to plan your exercise routine. This is where a personal trainer comes in handy, you can discuss your likes and dislikes when it comes to exercise and workouts and your personal trainer in Abu Dhabi or Dubai can then tailor-make a plan just for you. Of course any personal trainer can tell if you or your motivation is struggling and then change your regime to suit a different style of workout or different exercising techniques.

Find A Training Partner Or Personal Trainer…

This could be in the form of a friend, a like minded colleague or a personal trainer in the UAE. As I mentioned in my first point, motivation is a key factor in determining whether or not an individual will sustain an exercise routine and healthy lifestyle. Having someone with you to help you along this journey could be the difference between success and failure, especially if you’re just starting out. They could be there to motivate you during a workout, send you a text every now and again to make sure your diets on track, or even someone you can talk to when finding things difficult. Finally, there’s no shame in seeking the advice of a professional trainer who’s made health and fitness their life and career choice, even if it’s just to get you started. A personal trainer can help you stay motivated, show you numerous methods of training and help you determine which ones are best suited to you whilst ensuring you achieve your desired results.

5 Ways To Keep Yourself Motivated
Share This - Choose Your Platform

Problems with exercise & training motivation? Use the SMART solution…

Let’s face it – we all go through periods where we find it hard to get ourselves motivated with our training and exercise regime. Whether it’s the exercise part or making sure we are sticking to our nutrition plan ‘motivation’ road blocks do appear from time to time.

At Home Abu Dhabi professional Personal Trainer Tobe gives some tips and advice in the article below to help overcome these issues and stay on track.

Setting Yourself Goals…

Setting short and long term goals should be one of the first things you do when stepping into a gym. If you have no goals set how are you going to measure your progress!

Goals need to be SMART;

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Realistic

T – Timely

Rather than saying, “I want to lose a little weight,” a SMART goal might look something like this:

“I’m going to lose 15 pounds of scale weight by August 1st 2016”.

Once you have written your goals down look and remind yourself of them daily to keep that motivation strong!

Note; Setting goals that are not achievable and unrealistic will have a negative effect.

Remind Yourself Of Where You Started…

Sometimes along your fitness journey especially if you have a big goal, you lose sight of where you started.
You might have lost 20 pounds but still want to lose another 40.
Remind yourself of where you used to be. Look at before pictures, if your goal is getting stronger remind yourself what weight you used to lift compared to now. Subtle reminders of where you used to be can give you that extra boost when you need it!

Workout Buddy…

Exercise is better when you do it with a friend.
There’s nothing more motivating than knowing someone is waiting for you at the gym. Not only will a workout buddy help you avoid skipping exercise when you’re feeling unmotivated, but you will also work harder too.
Ask a friend to be your training partner and then schedule workout times that can be kept consistent from week to week. This helps establish consistency and builds good exercise habits for both of you. A personal trainer in Abu Dhabi makes a great motivational training partner – ensuring your stay up even when you are having a down day.

Keep It Fun & Switch It Up…

Don’t fall into the rut of doing the same exercises all the time… you will get bored. Change it up every 4-6 weeks. There are loads of workouts, exercises and personal trainer videos on the internet! Keep it fun and enjoyable there is no point doing something you hate, its going to have a negative effect on you and you’ll more than likely stop going. Find something you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to step away from the treadmill!

Stay Positive!

You’re going to have bad training days, everybody does. Think positive! tell yourself you’re going to have a great workout session. Especially at the end of the workout otherwise you’ll be dreading your next training session. Remember – A bad workout out is only the one you didn’t do.

Personal Trainer Tips for starting And Sticking To A New food Routine
Share This - Choose Your Platform

Taking Control Of Your Healthy Eating & Nutrition Plan…

So you are handling your new training program well, 4 to 5 sessions a week and your feeling great and getting fitter. Congratulations you have taken a massive step in the right direction, but your nutrition plan isn’t up to scratch and your weight loss or weight gain is suffering because of it. I know you have a busy life as many of us do in Abu Dhabi and some times things get over looked. It’s the beginning and I don’t expect you to weigh out everything you eat or count your macros. Smaller more manageable changes are the way to go for attainable success at the start. Here are a few tips from a personal trainer in Abu Dhabi to help you kick-start the change and stick to it.

Hold Yourself Accountable….

Track or monitor your food for a week by keeping a food diary or even taking photos on your phone. There is no hiding from the chocolate bar you had at 3 pm that then slipped your mind. Review it after the week and you will clearly see the habits that need to go.

Meet Yourself Halfway…

Habits are hard to break, good or bad because they become second nature and stopping a habit altogether can be a very difficult thing to do. If you’re having four soft drinks a day and two bags of crisps cut it down to two and one for the first week or two then cut it down again. Small adjustments to your healthy eating routine over a period are far easier to maintain.

Plan Your Meals….

It’s no secret that planning your weekly or daily meals out is a huge factor in your potential success. I’m not saying that you have to have every meal ready cooked so you and your family of bodybuilders can eat at a moment’s notice. But actively think about what you are going have for lunch or dinner and the temptation to order a take out cause you don’t have anything ready will be significantly less.

Cycle Your Recipes….

For those days when everything is a hundred miles per hour and you haven’t had a chance to stop and think what’s for dinner it handy to have five to ten recipes that you can make with your eyes closed. We are creatures of habit; just make the healthier habit an easier one too.

Consistency….

It sounds like the easiest of the tips but is probably the one that trips people up the most. Consistency with your planning, consistency with your meal choices is the key to success; there are no quick fixes for the long term so stay the path until it becomes second nature.

Food Shop On A Full Stomach….

It sounds silly but going to the supermarket when you’re hungry is a recipe for disaster! All the things you know you shouldn’t buy are jumping out at you from the shelf and before you know it your leaving with a family pack of snickers, three bags of toffee popcorn, and a full case of cola! There goes your good week down the drain.

Find What Works For You….

There will be ups and downs; the path to success isn’t a straight road. What your best buddy is doing might not be right for you and it is cases of trial and error until you find the solution so don’t get too disheartened.
