Lets take a look at some of the main reasons why adults of all ages, both male and female, need to learn how to swim and be confident in the water.
Reason 1 – Your Safety
Swimming is a valuable life skill that many of us learn as children. However, not learning how to swim as a child is nothing to be embarrassed about.
According to a study by The Red Cross Red Cross almost half American adults either can’t swim or have very limited skills in the water.
Although we couldn’t find any comparable statistics for the UAE it’s a good bet that the figures for adults who can’t swim in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Emirates are quite high too.
From a safety point of view adults need to learn how to swim. To put it bluntly, if you fell in the water for some reason and no-one was there to help this poses a life threatening situation.
Being an adult doesn’t mean you can’t learn and this applies to any age. Using the excuse that you are too old really doesn’t work when it comes to swimming.
Safety in the water is about being confident and able to save yourself (or someone else) if you need to. It doesn’t mean you need to be an Olympic class swimmer, just intermediate swimming skills.
Reason 2 – It’s Fun
Something as simple as learning to swim in Dubai can make a great difference to your social life.
That might sound strange at first but consider this. Taking a trip to the beach or maybe a water park is so much fun for everyone.
But, if you can’t swim it’s not the same – you can’t necessarily join in the fun or may even be afraid to do so.
If you are an adult parent who can’t swim you might even find it difficult to allow your kids to join in the fun because of your lack of swimming (and therefore lifesaving) skills.
Learning to swim in Dubai either with a group or private lessons means you will soon be able to enjoy water based activities as much as everyone else. And, it really isn’t that difficult to learn to be a confident swimmer.
Reason 3 – Swimming Is Great For Fitness
There are very few exercise methods that can match swimming when it comes to combining low impact exercise with all around cardio fitness.
The beauty of swimming for fitness is that you can tailor it to your own specific needs.
• Cardio Fitness – Swimming gives you a great cardio workout which is much more fun than other methods of cardio training. The more you do the more you will benefit but even gentle swimming a couple of times a week will really help
• Weight Loss – For all adults (of any age) swimming can help you lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. While it might not be as good as a crossfit workout for shedding a few pounds for many adults swimming will be more enjoyable for most
• Endurance – Building up your endurance levels can be tough. Some people enjoy running but during the heat of the summer in Dubai this can be difficult. Swimming in the sea or a climate controlled pool is ideal. And, the more laps you do the more your endurance levels will increase
• Swim Fit Classes – Swimming fitness classes like water aerobics and others are hugely popular in Dubai. If you have a fear of water which is preventing you from learning to swim you’re missing out on fun ways to get fit
