Personal Trainer Q & A Category: Exercise Types & Techniques

If you like HIIT training then Tabata routines might be right for you too.

HIIT based workouts are a great way to get your blood pumping with an all over cardio workout. Tabata is a type of high intensity internal training which can be done at any level of fitness.

  • In the UAE, Tabata is probably an exercise method that many people are not familiar with. As a personal trainer who offers Tabata training can you describe what Tabata is?

Tabata is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) consisting of performing a single exercise (traditional tabata) for 20seconds with 10seconds rest for 8 rounds. Exercises can also vary throughout (modern tabata) or the timings can switch also to 10secs work and 20secs rest (inverse tabata).

  • Tabata is defined as a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) method. How does Tabata differ from other HIIT training?

With tabata training in the UAE it is extremely short sharp bursts. A lot of other HIIT trainings can involve longer work times with some longer rest. But a tabata round will always be a short sharp 4 mins of intense work.

  • What areas of health and fitness is Tabata training good for? For example, is it just for aerobic and cardio exercise or does it help with body conditioning and weight loss too?

Tabata can help all forms of training. It can benefit cardio vascular, muscle growth, conditioning, weight loss…it ticks almost all the boxes. It’s a real shock to the system that really kicks up your heart rate so prepare for some tough but effective work. I use it a lot with my athletes as it almost mimics a sporting scenario where you’ve completed an action but then swiftly have to move on to do it again.

  • In the UAE is Tabata training suitable for all ages and fitness levels or are there some restrictions on who should be doing Tabata?

I wouldn’t say there’s a restriction on who can do a tabata. As long as the exercises are selected properly and the intensity levels are controlled then there is no reason why anybody couldn’t give it a try.

  • Is a Tabata personal training plan created for each client based on their needs or are there certain rules, routines and timings that need to be followed for Tabata to work best?

As I previously stated, a tabata is the specific timings from above and it depends on if you want to do a traditional or more modern tabata. Traditional tabata sticks to just 1 exercise but more modern ones tend to use 2, 4 or even 8 different exercises. I select the exercises based on my clients specific goals to keep them on track.

  • Can you provide some Tabata workout examples that you would use for your personal training clients in Dubai and explain how each workout provides benefit?

Probably one of the more simple tabatas is one I use to help warm up my boxing clients.

    • 20secs on 10secs off x8 – Speed Skipping
    • 20secs on 10secs off x8 – Straight Hands AFAP (Heavy Bag)

These 2 tabatas get their heart rate elevated and the right muscles fired up to ensure a productive session. It also mimics a boxing setting with bursts of punches and their upper body endurance coming into account.
